Tickseed
CoreopsisThe Prairie Sun: Coreopsis
The Coreopsis, commonly known as “Tickseed,” is a resilient North American native with a history defined by its “always cheerful” disposition and rugged utility. Its name is derived from the Greek words koris (bug) and opsis (view), referring to its small, dark seeds that resemble tiny insects—a clever evolutionary design that helped the plant hitchhike across the continent by clinging to the fur of passing animals. Indigenous tribes, including the Cherokee, Lakota, and Zuni, held the plant in high regard for both its beauty and its practical benefits. They used the roots and flowers to create medicinal teas for treating internal pains and digestive issues, and famously boiled the vibrant blooms to produce deep mahogany-red and bright yellow dyes for their textiles.
In modern times, the Coreopsis has transitioned from a wild prairie sentinel to a staple of the sustainable garden. It is celebrated by horticulturists for its extreme drought tolerance and its role as a “pollinator magnet,” providing a critical nectar source for bees and butterflies. Beyond its ornamental value, scientific research has begun to explore its pharmacological potential, with studies investigating the plant’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds for their neuroprotective and anti-diabetic effects. Whether seen in a high-tech lab or a low-maintenance wildflower meadow, the Coreopsis remains a symbol of optimism and endurance, proving that true beauty often thrives in the most challenging conditions.
